WORST HOSPITALS

by David J. Stewart | January 2010

Believe it or not, 50 to 65% of doctors in the United States are sued for malpractice at least once in their career. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), specified in one of its articles that over 225,000 Americans die each year due to medical malpractice. Nearly half of those deaths are due to  emergency room errors. Unbelievable as it may appear, the third leading cause of death in the United States (after heart disease and cancer) is medical malpractice.

The same JAMA's article provided these statistics:

- There are 12,000 deaths a year due to unnecessary surgery.
- There are 7,000 deaths a year due to medication errors in hospitals.
- There are 20,000 deaths a year from other hospital errors.
- There are 80,000 deaths a year due to infections in hospitals.
- There are 106,000 deaths a year from adverse effects of medication.

Perhaps not shockingly, of all the malpractice payments made world- wide, over 80% were made by United States physicians!
